We just wrapped up our first beginner youth kayak camp of 2015 on July 24. We had a wonderful week with 7 amazing young people who took the camp. The weather couldn't have been any better throughout the entire week.
We spent Monday out at Lake Ollalla learning kayak rescues and just paddling around, then moved to the Port of Toledo Community Boathouse for Tuesday and Wednesday where the kids learned paddle strokes and more rescues. As with most camps that we have done, they opted to spend more time upside-down and out of their kayaks than in them, but everyone had a great time. On Thursday we spent the day paddling Beaver Creek and visiting the nature center there. Then it was back to Toledo for the last day, where our participants were tested on their skills and received certificates of completion for the Coast Guard Auxillary's Paddlesports America class and the American Canoe Association's Introduction to Kayaking class.
We even had a special guest stop by the boathouse on Wednesday as McKenzie Thomas (one of our youth kayak camp alumns from last year) stopped by to demonstrate the skills that she and Tom Murphy had been working on over the winter. She has become an extremely capable paddler, as you can see from the following video. We're looking forward to seeing McKenzie and quite a few of our other campers back again during our Intermediate Youth Kayak camp at the end of August!
